Small hydropower plants - solutions up to 1.4 MW

MVE CONTROL: generator speed control + a regenerative inverter feeding 100 % active power directly into the grid. We design, manufacture and integrate everything under one roof in Brezno.

Čoltovo small hydropower plant with VONSCH MVE CONTROL technology

Why hydropower

Water is the most stable renewable source - it flows at night, under clouds and in still air. Compared to wind and solar it has incomparable advantages:

Predictable output - water flow changes gradually.
24/7 supply - independent of daylight, clouds or wind.
Lower CAPEX than wind or solar at comparable installed power.
No farmland footprint - integrates with the landscape.
Minimal transmission losses - generation can sit next to the consumer.
Stabilises grid edges - even small output makes a real difference.

How MVE CONTROL works

MVE CONTROL is a tandem of two inverters. The first handles generator speed control on a water-wheel motor or turbine, extracting the maximum power from the current flow and water speed. The second - an actively controlled regenerative inverter - delivers that power straight to the grid with a power factor of 1.

On startup the system auto-synchronises to both the grid and the generator. When current, frequency or grid parameters cross safety limits, the plant is immediately disconnected by opening the input contactor.

MVE CONTROL - technical details

Where to deploy MVE CONTROL

Water wheels in rivers

Vertical and horizontal wheel motors placed directly in the river bed. MVE CONTROL adapts orbital speed to the instantaneous water speed.

Waterworks with gravity systems

Turbines on drinking-water gravity loops. MVE CONTROL extracts maximum energy even at minimum flow - from "zero" up to rated power.

Turbines below rated power

Existing plants that fall below super-synchronous speed at low flow and would otherwise have to shut down. MVE CONTROL operates down to virtually 0 Hz generator frequency.

Parameters

Power up to 1.4 MW
Generator frequency 0 - super-synchronous
Power factor (cos φ) 1.0 (purely active power)
Topology 2× regenerative inverter in tandem
Generator standard induction or synchronous motor
Island operation optional - with accumulation for startup and excitation
