Battery-trolley mining locomotive for the Australian market

Customer challenge

Traction drive and battery power for a mining locomotive in demanding conditions.

VONSCH solution - turnkey

Mining traction on the other side of the world means one thing: no downtime, no compromise. For a mining locomotive built for the Australian market, VONSCH delivered the complete electrical heart and brain — traction converter, LTO battery system, control, diagnostics and a safety camera system.

The locomotive carries its own energy. A 552 V LTO battery (240S2P, Toshiba cells) delivers 75 kW continuously and up to 150 kW for short peaks, with 68 kN of tractive effort. Braking energy is recovered back into the battery, and thanks to LTO chemistry the battery lasts 9,000 cycles — built for decades of service, not a warranty cycle.

The solution is engineered to rail-vehicle standards (EN 14363, EN 1889-2, EN 62619) and hardened for a demanding mining environment — dust, vibration, heat. All electronics are split across six independently cooled boxes and ready for remote monitoring: we can service and diagnose across continents.

We are not just a component supplier. We are the heart and brain of our customers’ products and solutions.

Solution diagram
Scope of delivery (technical specification)
  • Traction converter with vector control (INV BOX) — powered from trolley or battery
  • On-board DC-DC converter (DC-DC BOX)
  • 552 V LTO battery system (240S2P, Toshiba cells) with BMS and MODBUS TCP
  • Locomotive control system, HMI and event recorder (CAB / DASH BOX)
  • Camera safety system and remote monitoring
  • Complete electrical equipment in six boxes (FUSE / CAB / DASH / INV / DC-DC / TCS)

What the customer gained

  • On-board energy — the locomotive is not tied to the trolley line along the whole route.
  • Regenerative braking returns energy to the battery — lower consumption, longer range.
  • LTO battery rated for 9,000 cycles — fewer replacements, lower lifecycle cost.
  • One supplier for the whole chain: converter, battery, control and diagnostics.
  • Remote monitoring and camera system — service and diagnostics across continents.
  • Rugged design for dusty, high-vibration mining environments.
  • Tandem via the DC link - with a lowered pantograph one locomotive powers the other over the shared 600 V DC bus, so operation keeps moving.

Why VONSCH

We reduce the risk of a wrong decision - from design to service you deal with a single partner who stands behind the solution.

  • A manufacturer, not a reseller - we develop and build power electronics in Brezno, Slovakia.
  • A turnkey solution - one responsibility from design through installation to commissioning.
  • Service and spare parts from Slovakia throughout the entire lifetime of the equipment.
