How our Slovak team prepared the locomotive for operation in extreme conditions.
While in Slovakia the working day was just beginning, in Australia we had already done several hours of intensive work. Our VONSCH team, together with our colleagues from Locoproject, were on the surface of one of the local mines, where the final phase of commissioning the new locomotive was underway.
The journey to get here was long – not only in kilometres, but also in the work that preceded the actual transport of the technology. But when we stood on the Australian surface, surrounded by a dusty landscape and heavy machinery, everything suddenly seemed different. We realised very clearly that products created at home, in a small Slovak company, would work in an environment that is completely unfamiliar to most Europeans.
600 V circuit preparation and systems check
The main task of our team was to commission the 600 V circuit and thoroughly test all locomotive systems. In underground operation, reliability was an absolute priority. Once it was transported “down”, there would be no room for improvisation or minor repairs.
Every component, every connection and every safety feature had to work 100%. This meant a lot of measurements, tests, verifications and detailed inspection procedures based on years of experience in demanding industrial applications.
Work away from home
Such projects are always double-edged. On the one hand, intense technical work, long days, challenging environments and separation from family. On the other hand, the unique opportunity to see the results of our work in practice on the other side of the world.
And that is something that keeps us in this work. The Banská Bystrica region, where we come from, is thousands of kilometres away, but the technology we develop and produce can overcome this distance. And work reliably even where conditions are harsher than anywhere else.
Slovak know-how in global projects
Although we are a second-generation family business, with a team of thirty people, we were operating in an environment where we were routinely competing with huge international companies. Our advantages were clear: professional depth, speed, flexibility and the ability to do things in a bespoke way.
And just such projects – whether locomotives, Traction Drives, battery systems or other custom-made solutions showed that Slovak industry has a lot to offer. Not only at home, but also abroad.
Why this mission was important
Every project in extreme conditions pushes us further. We validate technologies in real operation. We gain new experience, strengthen cooperation with partners and bring home know-how that we can translate into further innovations.
VONSCH is not a corporation. But we are a team of people who enjoy their work and who understand that technology is not just about parameters, but also about responsibility to the customer, to safety and to each other.
Conclusion from the other side of the planet
Standing a few metres away from a locomotive that is soon to be working hundreds of metres underground, on a continent where most of us have been for the first time, is a powerful moment. It’s a reminder of why we do this work. Not because of the exotic, not because of the travel, but because we can see how our solutions make a real difference. How Slovak technology is becoming a reliable part of international projects. And how a small company can grow so that our products travel further than most of us alone. And that’s something we’re all proud of.
